About the Placemakers Programme

The YearBeyond Placemakers Programme is a heritage project linked to tourism managed by the Western Cape Museum Service and forms part of the YearBeyond Youth in Service programme. This stream gives youth the opportunity to be placed at local museums across the province, supporting efforts to preserve heritage and community histories and promote tourism.

YeBoneers in this programme will assist museum staff with front-of-house and visitor engagements as well as by collecting and curating stories through oral history initiatives, storytelling events, and memory mapping activities.

What do YeBoneers do?

As a YeBoneer in the Placemakers Programme, your role will include (among other activities):

  • Provide Front-of-House Support: Welcome visitors at the museum entrance, manage visitor flow, and offer friendly, professional assistance.

  • Lead or Support Museum Tours: Guide visitors through exhibitions or assist staff in delivering engaging and informative museum tours.

  • Enhance Visitor Experience: Support public programmes and educational activities to create meaningful interactions with visitors.

  • Contribute to Documentation & Displays: Assist with recording stories and supporting the preparation of exhibitions or memory-related materials.

  • Collect Community Memories: Capture the stories, experiences, and oral histories of local residents through interviews, events, and recordings.

  • Promote Local Heritage: Participate in awareness campaigns and community activations that showcase the value of museums and storytelling.

What are the eligibility requirements?

You can apply for the YearBeyond Placemakers Programme if:

  • You are 18–25 years old.

  • You have a matric certificate.

  • You are computer literate.

  • You live within a 5km radius of one of the participating museums.

  • You love working with people.

  • You are passionate about heritage, storytelling, community engagement.

Meeting these eligibility requirements does not guarantee placement. All applicants must go through a recruitment and selection process to be considered for the programme.
